Selective Service System

About Selective Service System

Federal law requires nearly all males to register at 18 years of age with the Selective Service System. The registry may be used in a national emergency should Congress and the President determine additional personnel is needed to serve the best interests of the United States.

Recent changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, that is completed by current and prospective continuing education students in the United States to determine their eligibility for financial aid, unintentionally led to a decline in selective service rates by removing the requirement section to simplify the form. Students are now required to separately register with the Selective Service System online or by completing an application at local post offices.
