A Final Tribute of Honor and Tradition
The Massachusetts Military Funeral Honors Program offers a horse-drawn caisson for military funeral services, providing a solemn and dignified tribute to those who served.
The caisson has long been one of the most recognizable traditions associated with military funerals. Drawn by horses and accompanied by trained riders and a military funeral honors detail, the caisson provides a powerful and respectful final journey for an eligible service member or veteran.
Whether honoring a loved one at a national cemetery, veterans cemetery, or other approved funeral location, the Massachusetts Military Funeral Honors horse-drawn caisson offers families the opportunity to incorporate this time-honored military tradition into their loved one’s final farewell.
Rental Information
The caisson rental fee is $10,000 per day.
The rental includes:
- Horse-drawn caisson
- Two horses with riders
- Massachusetts Military Funeral Honors detail
- Travel costs within Massachusetts
- A modified casket designed for the transportation of cremated remains, when needed
For events held outside Massachusetts, additional travel costs may apply. Additional funeral honors support may also be required from the host state.
Requesting a Caisson
A completed Massachusetts Military Funeral Honors Caisson Rental Request form and a copy of the deceased’s DD214 or other appropriate documentation must be submitted to request the caisson.
A minimum of seven days’ notice is required.
Please complete the request form as thoroughly as possible. Requests should include information about the funeral service, location, date and time, funeral home, next of kin or funeral director, and the deceased service member or veteran.
Begin the Request Process
To request the Massachusetts Military Funeral Honors horse-drawn caisson, complete the Caisson Rental Request Form and submit it along with the required DD214 documentation.

The Massachusetts Military Funeral Honors Program will review each request and coordinate with the funeral home, family and appropriate military organizations as necessary.
