Historical Services

Historical Services is responsible for historical, heraldic and militia programs for the Massachusetts National Guard. The offices prepares lineages and determines campaign honors in coordination with the US Army Center of Military History and the Air National Guard History Branch, National Guard Bureau. Historical Services also coordinates with the US Army Institute of Heraldry in regard to organizational colors and unit insignia. The office maintains organizational history files for all of our units and also publishes unit histories. Historical Services answers questions concerning the history of the Massachusetts National Guard. Records of militia/National Guard personnel up to 1940 and active duty records of Massachusetts servicemen and women from 1861 to 1919 were recently transferred to the Massachusetts Archives. Requests for those records may be made by calling the state archives at 617-727-2816.
