Military Records Branch

The Military Records Branch is currently located at Hanscom Air Force Base, it's mailing address is Commonwealth of Massachusetts, JFHQ-MA, Military Records Branch, 50 Maple Street, Milford, MA 01757. The office was moved from its previous location in to this site in 2023.  The Military Records Branch was previously known as the War Records Section.  What follows is a brief overview of the services provided by this office:

Maintains copies of active duty discharges, DD Form 214, for residents, beginning in 1940, for the following periods:

• 1940-1947
• 1950-1955
• 1958-1973

(The “hard” copies of these discharges were collected as part of the payment process for state war bonuses, which were paid to veterans of World War II, Korea, and the Vietnam wars.)

More recently (1980 to present), discharges have been collected from all active duty service.

Maintains copies if all discharged Massachusetts Army and Air National Guard personnel from 1947 to present.  Some recent Army National Guard records are still maintained by the ARNG, but will be transferred to this office at some future date.

Most records have been placed into a database, which greatly streamlined the retrieval process.  Our personnel can locate a veteran’s records, then FAX, e-mail or mail them within a very short time – a great improvement over the previous hard copy filing system.

Our goal is to provide the best support possible to the veterans we service.  The Military Records Branch may be contacted by phone at (508) 422-1993, by e-mail at This email address is being protected from spambots. Military records prior to 1940 are maintained by the Massachusetts Archives. The telephone number is 617-727-2816 or email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The Massachusetts Medal of Liberty is open to all branches of the service and is awarded in the name of the Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as Commander-in-Chief of the Commonwealth to any Massachusetts serviceman or woman killed in action or who died as a result of wounds received in action.
