Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Message from The Adjutant General

The Massachusetts National Guard’s (MANG) ability to maintain a ready and reliable force in today’s complex and dynamic operational environment is critical to the security of the nation. Our goal is to ensure a diverse and inclusive workforce at all levels of the command to improve job satisfaction and increase retention rates.

I will support and empower leaders to develop and implement best practices for building and maintaining an inclusive and diverse force. We will set retention goals and establish measurable objectives in such areas as education, training, and mentorship. I ask all Commanders to review these programs and candidly assess their effectiveness in contributing to diversity and its impact on retention. In particular, I ask you to assess how you currently implement or plan to promote these goals within your organizations.

I challenge leaders to capitalize on opportunities to use existing programs such as officer and NCO professional development activities, professional development trips, formal and informal first line leader counseling sessions, The MANG Mentor Program, unit sponsorship programs, and community-based events. Successful implementation of this plan requires that MANG leaders, at all levels, leverage their diversity and inclusion practitioners, force managers, recruiting specialists, and innovation centers to develop actionable improvements that measure performance and tools to track progress. Leaders must integrate diversity and inclusion efforts into unit goals, mission objectives, talent management initiatives, and operational priorities for a successful implementation.

My end state is not to create a requirement with a check-the-box-program but rather an increased awareness to the importance of fostering an environment for career opportunities at all levels of the MANG while retaining diversity and enhancing inclusion.
